A Change of Life
By Morpheus

Amy felt a cold chill run up her spine as she stared at the box.  It wasn't an impressive looking box.  In fact, it looked like an ordinary shoe box.  However, the box was sitting in the middle of her bed when she knew for a fact that it hadn't been there a minute earlier.

Amy quickly looked at her bedroom door which was locked to keep her 8 year old brother Alex from just barging in on her whenever he wanted.  The door was still locked and she hadn't unlocked it since she'd been sitting on her bed a few minutes before.  But somehow, between the time she got off her bed to hide her diary in its secret spot and the time she turned back, this box had mysteriously appeared.

"How did you get here?" Amy asked, feeling more curious than afraid.

After a minute of just staring at the box, Amy slowly reached for it and opened the lit.  She wasn't sure what to expect but wouldn't have been surprised if it had been there had been a severed hand or something similar inside due to the mysterious way the box had appeared.  However, to her relief there was no such thing.  Instead, there was just a blue crystal pendant with a folded note laying on top of it.

Amy just stared at the contents for several seconds, not sure whether to feel disappointed or relief.  Then she shook her head and picked up the note, reading, "If you desire a change in your life you need just wear the pendant.  It will work but three times."  There was no signature on the note, just a small logo that looked like a blue butterfly.

"A change in my life?" Amy frowned, wondering what this note meant.  "That's weird..."

In spite of thinking that this was some sort of strange joke, Amy couldn't help but considering her life.  She was a 16 year old girl who was on the pretty side of average, had an obnoxious younger brother who was constantly getting on her nerves and a pair of parents who were almost embarrassingly normal.  It was actually a pretty normal...and boring life.

"I guess I could use a little change," she muttered as she picked up the pendant and put it on.

The moment Amy had the pendant around her neck it began to glow with an eerie blue light.  This was followed by a strange dizzy sensation which washed over Amy, feeling as though it flooded through her very being.  After a few seconds though the light and dizziness both faded.

"Weird," Amy mused with a shake of her head.

Then she suddenly noticed that something was different with her bedroom.  She looked around and stared in disbelief at just how much her room and all the decorations had changed.  The light green paint on the wall was gone, replaced with an ordinary off white.  Her bed was a different one as were her dresser and desk.  The small stack of stuffed animals that she'd long since outgrown but was still too attatched to get rid of had vanished, replaced by a tower of video games.  Even the hand made doll which had been given to her by her grandmother had disappeared from its spot on the shelf only to be replaced by a model of a car.

"It's a boys room," Amy exclaimed in realization, surprised by the fact that somehow it didn't feel like a surprise.  Somehow, it felt like this is the way it had always been and should be.

Amy slowly looked down at herself, feeling only the least bit surprised to see that her body had somehow transformed and now matched the room.  Amy wasn't sure how, but the pendant had somehow changed her into a boy.  She knew that she should be horrified by this but couldn't quite bring herself to feel that way.  There was a part of her that seemed to say this was normal, that she'd always been a boy.

"Weird," Amy whispered as she felt her now flat chest.  She reached between her legs and felt a new bulge.  She frowned, not quite sure if the weird part was that she'd become a boy or that she wasn't really bothered by it.

After a moment of just looking over her transformed body with that feeling of comfortable normalcy, she looked around her bedroom again and frowned.  If she'd changed...and her clothes had all changed to match her new body...and her entire bedroom had changed...then what else had?

Amy hesitated a moment then left her bedroom to look around.  Almost immediately she saw brother her Alex coming towards her, holding a football which he gestured to her with.

"Hey Adam," Alex exclaimed, "You wanna play some catch?"

"Not right now," Amy responded, realizing that she was Adam now.  It felt sort of right and natural, as though it really were her name and always had been.  She looked at Alex and suddenly remembered that she had promised to play ball with him today...though she certainly hadn't made any sort of promise in her old life.

"Butt munch," Alex exclaimed, suddenly punching Amy in the arm and running off.

Amy was momentarily surprised by the way Alex treated her though only for a second before she remembered that they tended to rough house and wrestle around in this new reality.  She shook her head, amazed at these new memories which kept coming to her and just how natural they all felt.

"If this keeps up," she mused to herself, "it won't be long before my real life is the one that feels fake..."

Amy slowly walked around the house, noticing that most things were the same though there were a lot of small changes.  All the pictures on the wall of her being a girl had been replaced with ones of her as a boy.  The small vase she'd made in art class then gave to her mom for Christmas several years ago was gone though she now vaguely remembered having gone to the store and buying her mom a present instead.

"I wonder what Lisa will say when she sees me like this," Amy chuckled to herself, imagining the look on her friend's face.

Then Amy paused, suddenly realizing that in this new reality Lisa wasn't her friend...but an ex girlfriend.  She was the first girl that Amy...that Adam had ever kissed.  However, that had been last year and they'd broken up since then.

Amy let out a sigh of disappointment, especially as she remembered what it had been like to kiss Lisa.  She'd like to try that out for real since she currently found the idea of kissing a cute girl to be quite appealing.  This was something she wouldn't have been able to really understand before though certainly could now.  Unfortunately, there wasn't going to be much chance to try kissing a girl for real since she didn't currently have a girlfriend.

Just then, Amy's mom' came into the room and exclaimed, "There you are Adam..."

"Yeah?" Amy looked at her mom, suddenly noticing that she was now taller than her mom.  Before she' d put on that pendant her mom had been nearly two inches taller than her but now that difference had been reversed.

"You promised me you'd have the garage cleaned out a month ago," Amy's mom stood there giving her a cold look.  "Well, you have the whole weekend off from school so there are no more excuses...  I want that garage cleaned out now."

"But," Amy started to protest that was her dad's job and that he'd actually taken care of that two months earlier.  However, her new memories suddenly reminded her that in this reality it was her job along with mowing the lawn and a lot of other yard work.  And as her mom had said, she'd promised to do it a month ago and had been trying to find ways out of it ever since.  After a moment, she reluctantly responded, "Okay..."

Amy grimaced and went to the garage, pausing to look over the huge pile of clutter which had taken years to accumulate.  She suddenly knew exactly why her other self Adam had avoided the obviously long and messy job of cleaning it as long as he could.   She certainly didn't want to do it either.

"But who says I have to?" Amy smirked, reaching for the pendant around her neck and thinking about how she didn't have to do this kind of chore as a girl.

Amy took off the pendant and was surprised when she didn't suddenly change back to normal.  Instead, she remained a boy...she remained Adam.   She held up the pendant and just stared at it for a minute, wondering why she didn't change back.  Then she realized that the note told her that putting the pendant on would change her life but it hadn't said anything about being able to go back to her old one by taking it off.

"Damn," Amy grimaced.

Of course, there was absolutely nothing wrong with her current life.  She already felt very comfortable as a boy and knew that she could easily continue living this life without any problems.  However, that meant she'd have to clean the garage and then do a lot of other chores over the next few weeks.  After all, there was a lot of yard work that needed to be done and it had all been Adam's responsibility for the last year.

"Damn," she muttered again.  "It seems I can't go back to my old life that easily but maybe I can get a better one..."   And with that, she put the pendant on again and immediately felt the same dizziness as before.

Amy looked around and realized that everything around her had suddenly grown a lot larger.   A moment later, she realized that it wasn't her surroundings which had grown but she who had shrunk.  Amy looked down at herself and saw that she hadn't just become smaller but younger as well...much younger.  As her new memories began to take their place, she could no longer remember much about what it had been like being a boy but she knew with absolute certainty what it was like being a 6 year old girl.

"Oh poop," Amy exclaimed in annoyance.  She'd wanted to get out of cleaning the garage but certainly not like this.  This was definitely not the new life she'd been hoping for.

Amy went back to the living room and stared up at her mom who now seemed like a giant in comparison.  She didn't like the way that suddenly made her feel small and helpless...but at the same time, a part of her felt comforted by this and was sure her mom could protect and take care of her.  Amy hadn't felt like that in her original life in quite a long time.

"Um...hi mommy," Amy gave her mom a nervous smile when her mom looked down and saw here there.

"I hope you're staying out of trouble," her mom gave her an amused smile.

Amy just grinned and responded, "Maybe," before she hurried out of the room.

Once Amy was out of her mom's sight, she took the pendant off and let out a sigh of relief.  Fortunately, it would be pretty easy to change out of this life.  She just hoped that the next one it gave her was back to her own age.  In fact, she hoped the next would make her into the prettiest and most popular girl in high school.   Then she shuddered at the sudden thought that it might even turn her into a baby or do something else she didn't like.

"Please be good," Amy begged the pendant.

Suddenly Alex snatched the pendant out of Amy's hands and stood there grinning down at her.  She stared up at Alex in horror, her former little brother was now 3 years older than her and a lot bigger.  And though Alex was nowhere near as big as their mom, he somehow intimidated Amy a lot more.

"Give that back," Amy demanded, glaring at Alex.  "It's mine..."

"Make me," Alex smirked.

"Give it back you meanie," Amy demanded again, this time trying to grab the pendant from Alex though he turned it into a game of keep away, holding it above her head too high for her to reach.

Alex continued teasing Amy with the pendant, pushing her away when she tried grabbing it from him.  She grimaced in frustration and embarrassment, hardly able to believe she was being bullied by her little brother.  Of course, he wasn't her little brother anymore.  He was her big brother.

Then Amy thought of a tactic that her new memories told her always worked in this new reality.  She suddenly began crying, doing so as loudly as she could.   Alex just stared at her with a blank expression as though unable to believe she'd start crying after so little teasing.

"What in the world is going on?" their mom demanded as she rushed in to see the source of the noise.

"He stole my necklace," Amy accused, pointing at Alex and giving him a smug look that their mom couldn't see.

"Give it here," her mom said, taking the pendant then holding it up for a good look.  She frowned and asked, "Where did you get this?"

"I found it," Amy said, suddenly having a feeling that was the wrong thing to say.

Amy's mom gave her a curious look before saying, "Then I'd better put this in a safe place until I can figure out who it belongs to."

Half a minute later, the pendant was sitting on the top shelf of the book case and well out of her reach.  She glared at Alex who only stuck his tongue out at her.  She stuck her tongue out at him back but he just turned and ran away to find something else to do.

"Oh poop," Amy muttered as she looked at the book case, wondering how she could get the pendant now.

Amy spent several hours waiting for a chance to get the pendant back but discovered during that time just how easy it was to slip into her new life and role.  She went into her room to think in private and before she realized it she was playing with her dolls and even forgot about the pendant until she eventually came back to the living room and saw the book case.

"I gotta get it back," Amy told herself, trying to build her determination.  "I don't want to go through all that school all over again..."  The idea of spending an extra 10 years in school was all the motivation she needed.

Amy made sure her mom was out of the room then quickly got a dining room chair and moved it to the book case.  After less than a minute, she had the pendant in her hand again and wasted no time in putting it back on.

Once the dizziness cleared, Amy looked around the living room and smiled at the sight of everything being back to normal size.  Then she closed her eyes and took several deep breaths as new memories settled into the place of the ones she'd had of being a little girl just a minute before.  After taking a minute to absorb her new memories, Amy opened her eyes and looked down at herself.

Amy now saw with her own eyes what her new memories had already told her...that she was no longer a little girl or even a teenager.  Amy was now a 24 year old woman and an attractive one at that.  The extra 8 years after her original age had really let her fill out and develop.  She cupped her now D cup breasts and smiled, feeling quite proud of them.  After all, they got her a lot of male attention and a lot of tips at the restaurant where she worked as a waitress.

It was then that Amy noticed that the pendant had vanished.  She felt where it had been, not feeling too surprised by its disappearance.  After all, she'd been warned it would only work for her 3 times and it made sense that it would go away in the same mysterious way it had first appeared.

"Too bad," Amy mused, thinking that even if she hadn't been able to use it again it would have been nice to be able to give it so someone who might.

Just then, Amy's mom came into the room holding two glasses of wine.  Amy stared at her for a moment, realizing that Emily wasn't her mom anymore.  Emily was her older sister.

Emily offered Amy a glass of wine and Amy told her, "Thanks sis..."

They sat down on the touch and Amy took a sip of her wine, part of her marveling at this situation.  Of course, the new part found this quite normal since she remembered coming over to visit her sister like this every couple weeks.  That also made her realize that in this new life, she no longer lived in this house.  She now lived in her own small apartment and her former bedroom was now the guest room.

"So, has work gotten any better?" Emily asked.

"Not really," Amy responded, pausing for a moment as she considered her new memories.  "My boss is still an asshole but at least the tips are good..."

Suddenly, Alex came running into the room, stopping in front of Amy and exclaiming, "Hi aunt Amy...  Guess what...  Dad says I can go to summer camp this year..."

"Really?" Amy responded with a smile.  "That's great..."

"Run along," Emily told Alex.  "Your aunt Amy and I are still talking..."

"Okay," Alex grinned,  "Bye aunt Amy..."   And with that, he turned and ran off.

Amy smiled as she took a sip of her wine, glancing at her sister and thinking about how many changes her life had gone through in just one day.  If she'd had her choice, she would have become the prettiest and most popular cheerleader in school or perhaps a rich and famous pop star.  However, this might not be the life she would have chosen for herself but it was the life she now had.  And as she considered her new memories she decided that it really wasn't a bad life to be left with.
